Introduction to META Tag theory and use
Meta Tags are used in nearly every web page. The primary use for Meta Tags is for search engine robots to identify your web page and site. Here we will concentrate on those tags, which ones to use and where to put them in your page using CyberStudio/GoLive.
It is very important to be noticed on the web. Most users rely upon search engines to find information for them. For example, a viewer will start their Web/Internet search at a popular search engine such as Yahoo, Alta-Vista, Infoseek, MSN, Hotbot, or Snap. There, they will be prompted for Keywords in their search. A viewer might enter "wedding photographer new hampshire" on any of the search engines, and ideally they should come up with a list of Wedding Photographers in the State of New Hampshire [I hope my page is there, hehe]. Then the viewer can select one of the sites/pages from the list and the search engine will take them to the site. It is valuable to have the correct META Tags on your pages, throughout your site. This is one place you always want to end up top of the list.
So lets discuss what kind of tags to put on a page/site. In this example, we would have a list of meta tags that would be related to wedding photography and the location of the studio/photographer. Here is an example list of meta tags:
<meta name="keywords" content="photography, weddings, wedding, New Hampshire, photographs, portrait, family, senior, commercial, wolfeboro, Lake, pictures, wolfboro, wolfsboro, wolfeborough, wolfsborough, photograph, scenic, photo, photos, picture, Web, site, design, girl, boy, bride, groom, the, a, high, school, portraits">
Hopefully, these tags will instruct the robots to put this photographer on the top of their lists. As you notice, the tags include about 25 keywords, which is about how many words a robot will read before going on to another page. Secondly, you will notice that there are no repeated words, as robots will stop reading once they have come upon a duplicate keyword. Also, you may want to include misspellings of words that are commonly spelt incorrectly. Shown here is the name of the town Wolfeboro, no one ever spells it with the "e" so I included commonly used misspellings.
It is also important to add description META Tags to your page. The description tags should not include any commas, and should be no longer than about 25 words. This line should be a brief description of the page or the site. There are several other meta tags that can be used for your page, most of them are above the level of this tutorial and will be discussed in advance tutorials for Cyberstudio/Golive. Two helpful resources for increasing your knowledge of META Tags are:
