Stripping GoLive tags on upload

(skip the intro and get me right to the tutorial!)

Why would you want to? There's a number of reasons. Like 'kilobytes.' Not much of an issue if your site only consists of a couple of pages, but if you have hundreds of pages and lots of GoLive tricks included, those tricks use custom tags and code that can be stripped out, saving precious server space.

How about a little privacy? While Microsoft and Intel are still making their minds up on this one, GoLive offers you the ability to strip out not only your GoLive-specific tags, but also any comments [included in <!-- comment tags -->], spaces and line breaks. If you strip out all of this information, your web pages will work just fine, but the code will be extremely difficult for some snooper to "borrow" for their own use.

On a simple page with four GoLive Button Images built on a GoLive Grid, stripping everything ended up saving 1.2 k in data. Doesn't sound like much, but when you're one of the thousands of people still using 28.8 modems, that could be the deciding factor for if they wait for your page to load.

Of course, there's also a good reason to leave the code intact: sharing with others. You'll notice that GoLive has the ability to download web pages directly from the Internet [File > Web Download...]. If you are working on a project with other GoLive users, leaving your GoLive code will make it much easier for your colleagues to work on your pages.

First, Finish Things Up

Make sure your site is all set to be uploaded - no broken links, no typos [really!], all the files are in the Site folder, etc. Under the Site menu, choose Export Site...

Now you'll see several options available. You can learn more about these options on pages 623-626 of the GoLive manual. For now, click on More...

Check off the boxes next to whatever you want removed from every single page of your site. Don't worry about stripping spaces or linefeeds: they won't ruin regular text. This action will only affect tags and other code.

Click OK, then Export... and you will be at a standard Save dialogue window. GoLive will now save a duplicate of your site without the tags you checked off earlier. Your original files will remain untouched. Take the new site and upload it with your favorite FTP client.

That's it! You're done.
