Developer Guidelines

First of all, make sure you take a good look at the tutorials on this site. You will be able to get a quick handle on the site's format and layout.

Communication with the mother ship is essential at all stages. This prevents us from having two people working on the same tutorial, and gets you quick answers to your questions. Your e-mail for contact is tutorials@goliveheaven.com.

Pick out tutorials you can do and are familiar with. This will ensure speed and accuracy in your work.

KISS - design with the lowest common denominator in mind, so explain things step by step. You will see in the tutorials currently on the site, there are screenshots of the menu selections, etc. The more experienced users will just scroll over them, but beginners may depend on those simpler steps.

Edit, edit, edit - Your name is going to be on this [hehehe], so check for spelling and grammar before you send. We will do this on this end, but since we usually do my coding and editing at the wee hours of the morning you shouldn't depend on it =).

Screenshots - The table where these will be displayed [this table, to be exact] is only *-> 435 <-* pixels wide...we would like to keep the screenshots within this, and avoid having to open another image. You will see that the "screenshots" in the tutorials online are sometimes just portions of the screen, not even full windows. We should also try to keep screenshots as much as possible to MacOS 8.x platinum, to prevent disorientation among newbies =). Screenshots should always be placed AFTER the explanation referring to them, that is, use the TEXT - IMAGE - TEXT - IMAGE format. Screenshots should be centered and have no text wrapped around them. We use ImageReady to save our screenshots, compressing them as gifs, usually at 32 colors [only do this if it doesn't look crummy, but try to keep the file size small nonetheless]. In large animated gifs, experiment with turning transparency on and off...we have found this to reduce image sizes by 10K or more in larger images.

Credits - The downloadable template at the bottom of this page includes a sample credit script with blanks. Credits are made up of three sections:

  1. Author: "This tutorial was contributed by _[Name]_. If you have any questions, corrections, or suggestions on how to improve it, you may email him at ___[e-mail]__." You can also put in your personal home page in this section if you wish.
  2. Position: "__[Name]_ is currently a __[Title]__ for __[Company]__." Please do not directly advertise your services in this section. You may make a link to your commercial site. If you wish to advertise on GoLiveHeaven.com please contact us for rates.
  3. Source: "Sources: ___________." with appropriate links.

Template - Here is the template you should use to create tutorials. You need Stuffit Expander 5.x to expand the .sit file. Please place all of your images into this folder and stuff the whole folder when you submit it [to tutorials@goliveheaven.com].

  • GLH Template [.sit-43k] [.bin-64k] [.hqx-57k] -- Stuffit 5.x

Note: For now, you must Option-Click to download these files. This is a server problem and will be fixed soon.

Final Edit - We reserve final edit authority over the spelling, grammar, and style [both textual and graphic] in the tutorials. What that means is we can correct errors in spelling, grammar, and style [both textual and graphic] without having to get your approval. If there are mistakes in content, we will let you know and ask you to revise it. We would like to be able to ask permission to make any changes, no matter how small, but if we get even half the number of tutorials we are projecting, this will be impossible and highly impractical.
